What it is
Pickleball is a paddle sport on a court about a third the size of tennis. You hit a hard plastic ball with holes over a net, almost always in doubles. Rec centers run mixed-age open play: beginners and regulars share the same boards, and a loaner paddle is normal.
Why people stay
You can get a game without recruiting three friends. Rallies last long enough to feel like sport and short enough that a new person can stay in them. The gear list is small. 24.3 million people played in the U.S. in 2025, which means most towns already have a court and a posted open-play hour.
